Pet Stain Removers -
Care and Cleaning of Urine Stains

As all pet owners know, one of the most difficult stains and odors you can encounter is a urine stain. The tips and cleaning instructions below, featuring our patented pet stain remover product, will help to combat this problem and keep your carpet - and home - fresh, clean, and odor-free!

Facts and Tips about Pet Urine Stains

  • Urine stains can reappear over time. The stain spreads wide underneath the carpet and padding. As the stain dries, it travels back up to the top (this is known as wicking) and can resurface.

  • Pet urine can affect the dyes used in carpet. Not all occurrences will result in a permanent stain depending on the content of the urine (the pet’s diet) and the dyes used.

  • Some urine spots may be immediately noticeable on the carpet or furniture, while others may take weeks or months for a reaction.

  • When urine spots develop slowly and are noticed after much time has elapsed, the dyes and carpet fibers may be permanently damaged. For example:
    • In a Beige carpet….blue dyes area attacked….stain appears red, yellow or orange.
    • Moisture can weaken the layers of the carpet, allowing separation or delamination of the backing material. Seam areas can be damaged and separate.

  • Once pet urine is absorbed into the backing of the carpet, complete success from the use of an odor remover is unlikely.

To treat urine-damaged areas:

Wet
To achieve the most successful removal of stains and related odors, it is important to address this problem as quickly as possible. Prepare a vinegar rinse to neutralize any leftover residue that may cause discoloration. To make a vinegar rinse, mix one part white vinegar to three parts water. Apply the rinse to the freshly cleaned area. Do not soak. Ventilate the area well, using a fan blowing directly across the damp carpet to accelerate the drying process.

Dry
Older urine stains are difficult to remove, often leaving carpet fibers permanently discolored or with an unpleasant lingering odor.

Woolite's pet stain remover products can help greatly.
  • Clean with Oxy Deep ® or Pet Stain & Odor Remover according to the label directions.
  • Rinse with clean, damp sponge until all stain remover is removed.
  • Blot (do not RUB) area thoroughly. Absorb remaining moisture in carpet with layers of white paper towels weighted down.

Ventilate the area well, using a fan to accelerate the carpet-drying process.
